CKC:
The Center for Knowledge Communication develops advanced technology to improve teaching and learning. Current focus is on the psychology of human learning, strategies for effective teaching, and the dynamics of human-machine interactions. Researchers build computer systems that encode a deep understanding of the domain, the tutoring process, and the presumed knowledge of each student. The systems tailor their responses to individual needs and capabilities. These systems are evaluated with typically achieving as well as students with disabilities. Research is focused on social learning, e.g., collaboration through the World Wide Web and students working with virtual companions.
Over the past twenty years the Center has researched:
- User models to assess student knowledge and reason about unpredictable human learning behavior
- Planning mechanisms to make decisions about tutoring strategies
- New-media systems, e.g.: intelligent simulations, pedagogical learning companions
- Systems that recognize and respond to student emotion
- Authoring tools to aid in the construction of intelligent tutoring systems
