FOREST:

A simulation-based software package that directly scaffolds the use of the simulator to develop and explore hypotheses and to extend empirical measurements made at real field sites. Forest helps the student explore the assumptions underlying the simulation and the larger intellectual framework surrounding it. The program ncludes a Formula Inspector that provides a "glass box" user-modifiable simulation model.
Early prototypes of the software and the associated classroom activities were tested in Spring 1999. Further development continued through Summer and Fall of 1999 with another round of testing in Spring 2000.

More details about the FOREST project can be found at this site.
The FOREST project was funded, in part, by the Course, Curriculum, and Laboratory Improvement Program, National Science Foundation.
