Why Rashi?
RASHI is an acronym for "Rabbi Shlomo ben Yitzchak." Rabbi ben Yitzhaki was an 11th century scholar and teacher, native to France, famous for his ability to present the complex meaning of the Torah and Talmud in a clear and succinct fashion, and for a teaching style that required careful inquiry into evidence from original texts. Both casual and serious students still use his writing, and his methods, as they a centerpiece of contemporary Jewish study.
Rashi, The Inquiry Tutor, uses an approach similar to Rabbi ben Yitzhaki’s. Students use the Rashi program to collect and analyze evidence, and then draw conclusions based on this evidence, to solve problems in a variety of disaplines. Like the teaching style of Rabbi ben Yitzhaki, the Rashi tutor encourages careful query and examination of evidence, leading the student to choose concise, well-supported conclusions.
The name Rashi was chosen for The Inquiry Tutor in honor of Rabbi ben Yitzhaki’s example of scholarship, and teaching methods.
